TURKEY: Cooling textiles developed to avoid summer heat

ANKARA:  The Aegean University (EÜ) Turkish Textile Association Joint Research Center has developed a cooling textile which is effective in hot summer days.

The scientists have managed to make temperatures of 50 degrees Celsius feel like 35 degrees Celsius using salt hydrates obtained from Acigöl.  The cooling textile is used for hats.

Professor Isik Tarakçioglu said “We developed a useful model that will help to reduce the effects of excessive heat and coldness. An aesthetic form is the next step that concerns designers.”

Tarakçioglu said the company will develop intelligent textile products with patent rights under ‘useful product.'

This is not a new invention. This system was first used in clothing for astronauts. We used the salt hydrates obtained from Acigöl as phase converters to reduce the cost. The cost of 100 grams hydrate to be used for one hat is YTL 0.10.

To use it for curtains, the cost per square meter will not exceed YTL two.

The company developed their first projects with car seats in mind since they get excessively warm during hot days. Then it was tried for hats, blankets and curtains.

The company achieved and received the ‘useful model' certificate. It is in touch with some textile companies.

The system can provide important advantages when used in military clothes and curtains. “We are carrying out studies to make its usage possible in medical sector,” said Tarakçioglu.

The phase changing system can save energy by 25-30 percent in curtain and roof systems of houses.  It is possible to use them as a heater in winter months in houses facing southward. During the summer, it can also prevent excessive heating thus reducing the energy consumed by air conditioners.

The products are long lasting. If cooled in a fridge, the products have more efficiency. They must be kept below 28 degrees Celsius.
