KENYA: T-shirts have become symbols of patriotismNAIROBI: T-shirts are a new form of expression. In Kenya T-shirts have evolved from boring plain generic prints to statements of fashion or symbols of patriotism. Many Kenyans want T-shirts with the country’s flag or their names emblazoned on them. Ttwo continents across the Atlantic— North America and Europe, claim that it as their innovation. One story says the T-shirt evolved from “light cotton undershirts” worn by European soldiers in the First World War, but American soldiers popularised it. The letter “T” supposedly stands for training. The garment was given a new label “rebel wear” because of the hippie tie and dye T-shirts. T-shirts are in demand not only because of the uniqueness of each piece, but also the pricing. A T-shirt will cost between Sh500 and Sh2,500. The cost follows a straightforward rule; the more complex the design, the higher the price. Arnold Mgharo started the label Sanaa in 2004 and he has noted that there is a big change of attitude among Kenyans about local products. His clients’ favourite colors are white, black, red and green – the Kenyan flag colours. Another emerging market is Kenyans abroad. They are tired of the embroidered “Jambo Kenya” T-shirts and want something else that reminds them of home. One of the DesignsHe walks around with a notebook showing his sketches to potential clients so that they can have an idea of what to expect. He also relies on word of mouth. Since it cannot be done in large scale as the materials, including plain T-shirts and fabric paints are rather expensive.
