IRAN, ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF: The wonders of Persian carpets

TEHRAN: Georgeous is one of the newer designs. A carpet with yellow rose motifs would make a great Valentine’s Day gift for your loved one. Picture-Perfect is a dual-sided carpet of a horse with very fine weaving would make a lovely wall hanging. When one mentions fine handmade carpets, Persian carpets quickly come to mind as they are indeed magnificent pieces of art.

Persian carpets are renowned for their richness of colour, variety of patterns and quality of design. “In Iran, a carpet is considered a piece of prized art. Persian carpets are an investment because their value increases with age. As time goes by, fewer and fewer people produce these works of art and thus the value goes up,” said Reza Khani of Persian Collections.

Reza said the value of a good Persian carpet appreciates by an average of 20 per cent a year. “There are more than two million people weaving carpets in Iran and each year, they produce almost six million metres of carpet. There are more than 3,000 villages involved in carpet-weaving and each village has its own style and method. Carpet weaving is passed on from generation to generation.”

“A carpet purchase is for a lifetime and for the same piece you bought two years ago, you will have to pay more today. Sometimes, people ask me why Persian carpets are expensive but they should actually ask why it is so cheap, because it takes between five months to five years to make one, depending on its quality, which is why some carpets sometimes cost more than others” he added.

The carpets come in different designs from various Iranian cities and their varied types of knots. Persian carpets come in a variety of sizes and designs. There are basically three types of Persian carpets, city, tribal and village, each with its own style with its own medallions to identify where it is from.

City carpets are made of the finest quality. They come from the Persian towns of Nain, Qum and Tabriz. These carpets are finely knotted and usually made of the finest silk or wool, or a combination of both. Their designs are exclusive and are made by master weavers. These cost from RM 1,000 up to RM 380,000, depending on the quality.

Tribal carpets on the other hand, are woven by nomadic tribes and mostly feature geometric designs. Being the oldest and most original of Persian carpet designs, they are made from natural, strong durable wool and are suitable for “heavy traffic” areas. They are priced from RM 200 to RM 3,000.

The village carpets are hardly-knotted. Cheaper than city carpets, they come only in wool and feature bold and geometrical designs and colors. These are priced from RM 150 to RM 2,500 depending on the size.
