MALAYSIA: Textile workers protest against inappropriate treatment

KUALA LUMPUR: Nearly 800 Bangladeshi workers from four textile factories in Taman Bandar, Batu Pahat, and in Johor protested against the improper treatment meted out to them by their employers.

The workers arrived in 20 chartered buses to the Bangladeshi Embassy to voice their complaints against their employers about monthly salary and other issues like medical benefits.

The Immigration Department and representatives from the police, the Manpower Department and the Bangladeshi Embassy convened a meeting at noon to seek a solution to their problem.

Immigration Director-General Datuk Wahid Md Don said the workers were given three options - to return to work with their current employers and be paid the promised salary, return to their country in stages or continue to work in Malaysia but with different employers.

The government has already imposed a ban on recruiting workers from Bangladesh on Oct 3 due to the numerous problems in the hiring of Bangladeshi workers.
There are about 300,000 Bangladeshi workers in Malaysia and they make up the largest number of foreign workers in the country, after Indonesians.
